Seminar talk: Prof. Buwa on Multiscale Modelling & Simulations of Multiphase Flows

It is our pleasure to announce a seminar talk by Prof. Dr. Vivek. V. Buwa, IIT Delhi on Monday, September 9, 14:00 in Room 00.133-128, Cauerstrasse 11 with the title:

Multiscale Modelling & Simulations of Multiphase Flows: Applications to Packed Bed Reactors

If you want to attend via zoom, please contact cs10-support@fau.de

Abstract:

Several industrial processes involve a wide variety of multiphase flow processes, for example, in oil and gas industry, chemical processing, power generation, green energy processes, etc. In the first part of the talk, Prof. Buwa will present a brief overview of the research activities of his research group at IIT Delhi on advanced experimental characterization of diverse types of multiphase flows, development of multi- scale computational models and their applications to solve industrial problems.

In the second part of the talk, Prof. Buwa will present his group’s work on multi-scale modelling of packed bed reactors. With the example of a packed bed reactor, he will discuss the methodologies to simulate reactor(bed)-scale liquid distribution and finally particle-scale flow and transport processes. He will discuss the development of Eulerian multifluid model to simulate gas-liquid flow through packed beds and the challenges associated with the closure models. Further, he will discuss particle-resolved simulations single-phase flow accompanied with chemical reactions and heat transfer. Finally, he will discuss his recent work on the simulations of particle-scale two-phase flows performed using the Volume- of-Fluid method.

About the speaker:

Prof. Buwa is the Schlumberger Chair Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and also the Dean (Planning) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He obtained his doctorate jointly from IIT-Bombay and CSIR-NCL Pune in India. At IIT Delhi, he leads a research group working on computational flow modelling and simulation, transport phenomena and reactions in multiphase systems and process intensification. He is a recipient of research fellowships from Bavarian Science Foundation (Germany), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Teaching Excellence Award from IIT Delhi and Global Visiting Professorship of the TU Munich.
